As more and more women experience safe and satisfying results with breast augmentation, it is no surprise that it remains the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure in the world. Its rapid rise in popularity has given surgeons and patients alike countless options that influence how the patient’s new breasts will look. But in spite of its popularity and customizability, breast augmentation also has one of the highest rates for revision among other plastic surgery procedures. Why?
Breast implants are not lifetime devices, and complications, although rare, can occur any time after surgery that may require revision. Interestingly, the number one reason women get breast revision surgery has nothing to do with complications and everything to do with size.
There are so many factors that influence the shape, size, and overall appearance of the breasts after augmentation, and Dr. Rodriguez Sierra understands the importance of relaying this information to every patient. Equally as important though is the patient’s communication of their expectations with the surgeon. At the initial consultation, the patient should have a good idea of the way she wants her breasts to look both in and out of clothing. Many women have a certain cup size in mind, but they are unsure about the amount of projection they want or the amount of volume they want in the upper breast. Dr. Rodriguez will work with you to help you choose the exact appearance that you want, but there are a couple of things you can do before the consultation to narrow your options.
How to Get the Most Satisfying Results with Breast Augmentation
Look at plenty of before and after photos
In searching for a qualified plastic surgeon, you have hopefully seen plenty of breast augmentation before and after photos. As you sort through these images to find the shape, size, and overall appearance that you think you would like, be sure to pay attention to the patient’s body type. Implants of the exact same size will not look the same on women with different builds. Implants that are large in size or have a greater projection tend to look less natural on women with a small chest width or narrow shoulders. While some women want this appearance, others prefer a more natural appearance. Dr. Rodriguez will evaluate your body type and make sure you understand what results you can expect with the implant size you want.
Take the rice test
The rice test is a simple way you can “try on” your ideal breast size in the comfort of your own home. Simply fill up two stockings with the amount of rice that correlates to the approximate size you want (refer to the chart below), tie them shut, and insert them into your bra. Since bra sizes vary among brands and have changed over the years, knowing the number of cc’s you want will be a much more exact estimate.
